Unix Performance Management Training?Q. Unix Performance Management Training? I'm seeking training in Unix performance management training. My organization has a large software testing division and we have been involved with functional, integraton and "minimal" performance testing for some time and just recently moved into a HP-UX 11.0 environment with Oracle 8 running large (multi-platform) financial applications. We are anticipating rapid growth in the Performance Management area and would like to identify a good training source. I have found some conferences (a co-worker just attended the CMG in Reno), and vendor training on specific PM tools, but I am looking more toward OS architecture/configuration, database tuning, bottleneck isolation and not least of all PM theory. ICCM Forum is offering an excellent program in May 2000 but I require something sooner. I am aware of Dr. Gunther's Stanford workshop and I'm currently reading his book "The Pratical Performance Analyst" and this appears to be an excellent course. But for the immediate future my engineers need exposure to the use of unix utilities (sar, vm/iostat, top ...), using / understanding these results, and tracking Oracle events. Would appreciate some recommendations for locating training for 2 of my Test Engineers? A. - You would probably be better off asking this in comp.sys.hp.hpux, rather than an architecture group. HP has a number of classes, and some of them include performance tuning, both for HP-UX specifically as well as Oracle on HP-UX specifically. There are also additional software packages you can buy (Glance, Perfview, ITO) that provide some additional functionality in this area, and they often come with some HP commitment for training your people and/or sending consultants on site to both evaluate your environment and train your people. You probably ought to talk to the people who sold you your HP systems, and ask them to put you in touch with the correct people within HP (or go to HP's web site and hunt around and find out how to contact the correct people yourself) - If you are looking for more general performance tuning information that is specific to Unix (rather than one flavor of Unix) or specific to Oracle, you probably want to try USENIX as a source for information on the former, and Oracle for information on the latter. But beware that the things that are important for performance on HP-UX aren't going to all be applicable to Solaris, for instance, and vice versa. The more general the information you get, the less useful it really turns out to be.
