how can a homeschooler take North Carolina Drivers Education?
Q. We just recently moved to North Carolina, and I heard that state law requires that all 15 year olds complete a driver's education course before they can get a learner's permit. Is this true? If so, how can a homeschooler take this training? Frankly, the whole thing sounds like a ploy by the Public School System to force homeschoolers to fall under their control.
A. I bought this a yr ago June at a homeschool conference curriculum fair in Denver, Co. I really like the program, his introductory cassette tape is great, he stresses that kids do not receive enough drive time in a typical drivers education program (maybe 6 hours) and that kids are not mature enough at 16 to handle the responsibility of having a license. Chuck Taylor was a traffic cop and accident investigator for many years. My husband is starting the program with my son just this week. He called me and asked me how many hours our son had in drive time, including the ranch work. I said skip the ranch driving, there is no stress there, what, driving around scattering poop and feeding hay is supposed to count? Nah. Road driving dear! About 45 minutes worth! ha ha I think they are supposed to have a total of 70 hours. (The program and my son and husband are in another state for a while) So, hopefully he will start getting some practice in low level traffic areas. OUt here we have NO traffic. We are in the boonies, if you haven't guessed!
