Management Training in UK?

Q. Management Training in UK? In today's Daily Telegraph ( Dec 00) there's an article in the 'businessfile' pages within the Appointments pages .. Unfortunately it's not on the paper's website, so I can't give a link ... It seems that the latest in Management Training Seminars is Reiki ... "Flutter, flutter, titter. I am a butterfly and the managing director of Marketstore, Europe, is my leaf, but leading me blindfold through a real and fragrant garden. In this, the new age of management training, we study Reiki [Japanese healing therapy involving the laying on of hands] and beat drums ..." Which of my heartfelt wishes deserves priority? Chris suggested practicing Reiki healing might induce the sensitive state which helps people sense their own path. Opening our crown chakra was a subtle way to get in touch with what resonates: 'not a tin opener job'". This is good news ... stressed-out management needs all the help it can get ...

A. - Having dug out the website ... not too difficult, I guess .... I have to say that I'm impressed with the philosophy ... businesses need more of this instead of internal squabblings and shelling out dosh to Hector .. - Though personally I'd say that the people who *really* need the help are the ones in the Taylorist high-volume, low-control jobs (probably the biggest single workplace stressor of all, that. The more you limit people's choice over what they do and when they do it, the more stressful things become). Call centres spring to mind for example. Stress isn't the prerogative of senior management, though some of the ones I've known have been extremely good at creating it. Never mind, maybe it'll filter down. I do hope it filters down. Would be awfully sad to think companies were seeing it as some sort of elitist "management development" thing, wouldn't it ? - Bit of a psychologist. Diverged into other areas. Renowned for his "time and motion studies" where he studied the actions undertaken by workers and reduced them to their maximally efficient base components. Famously demonstrated how his techniques could more than double the maount of work a man could do in a day (by getting a guy to take micropauses Taylor got the guy who was moving the least amount of pig iron in a day to moving well and truly the most by a huge margin). Employers jumped on the theory since it promised to increase productivity and hence revenue. Workers had to get everything exactly right or they were fired and readily replaced since the country was in a bit of a depression earlier this century when Taylor was doing his work. He's known as the father of scientific management theory. His theory is abused though, for it appears to reduce workers to machinations or battery hens, yet it has qualities worthy of study as more than an item of historical interest.
