Ged Science

Q. I am not really sure about how relevant standardized tests are. However, the 8th grade MEAP science proficiency scores in the school district where I do some subbing has ranged from 3 to 6% proficient the past three recorded years. Is this a crisis or not? The state of Michigan norms are around 28% proficient, I think. However, I am not sure what ages are covered in the last stat. I just heard it mentioned during the news.

A. Hard to say. Some don't consider the tests valid, and others note surveys showing that student today know more than their parents and grandparents regarding science. But, that was in the article. Did you read it? I'm quite pleased that some of the media has dropped out of the "crisis" mode regarding the misinterpretation, and over- emphasis, of standardized education scores. I have read plenty of SA articles, though not as many as before. Yes, I read it. I suppose that it is not a crisis when American firms have to import the majority of their engineers, and about 1/3 of the teaching profs/TAs are also being imported. I have taught a number of the 8th grade classes as a sub last schoolyear. One day I gave out the interim grades of one homeroom class. 40% of them had done no work all semester and had an overall GPA of 0. I don't know what happened to them. I assume that they all were socially promoted into high school. I doubt if their (grand)parents were like this! I have seen some of the MEAP test preparation books. They are fairly straightforward. The students ALL receive coaching within a few days before these tests. Science is usually the last teaching subject of the classday and is probably the one neglected/omitted when time is limited. A large percentage of the girls are totally nonresponsive for the science classes, especially in the middle school. I believe that the poor science scores (3 to 6% proficient over three years) there were deserved. I think that about 25% of the students take more than the minimum courses in math and science in order to graduate from high school. This figure is about 3 times less than a generation ago.
