Ged CoursesQ. Does anybody who reads this group have a real experience with the death penalty either pro or con?. Say a victim or maybe a crimal. I mean actual experience with the individuals. A. You might say I have alittle personal experiance with the death penalty. My cousin, Daniel Garrett, was Karla Tucker's co-defendant and was also sentenced to die by lethal injection. I feel the same way today that I felt almost 15 years ago when my cousin and that woman were arrested, they did it, they confessed to it, whatever punishment the court deemed necessary was proper and just. That doesn't mean I was happy with my cousin spending the last 9 years of his life on death row. In 1993 he was granted a new trial and was awaiting that trial when he died. For 9 years he prayed for death instead of spending another day in prison. The state of Texas is set up to house male death row inmates, but not female death row inmates. Male inmates are kept in solitary confinement and given one hour of recreation each week. They have no contact with other inmates. Female death row inmates are allowed contact with other inmates. They do things like crafts that the other inmates do, they take GED courses, whatever any other inmate at the unit would be able to do. I happen to know a teacher who once taught GED courses at the female unit. KFT got a GED not long after being condemned to death row. The tax money I work my ass off for was wasted to give an education to a condemned murderess, is there any logic in that? Of course, after the hell my family and I have gone through over the last 14 plus years, I'd be happy to pay for KFT to receive 100 GEDs if the final outcome would be the same. When someone close to you is condemned to die it's not an easy thing, even if you know in your heart and mind that they are guilty. I finally decided the only way to deal with it was to think of Danny as having a terminal illness and that he would someday die. As it turned out a terminal illness did kill him, and my family could at least be glad of the fact that he died with dignity. But had he been executed I would have sat in the witness room and watched him breathe his last breath, because even though he was a murderer I loved him very much.
