Free Ged Class

Q. Can you give more info about your education programs?

A. Inmates at the Arizona State Prison Complex - Yuma have a variety of educational opportunities available to them: 1. High School G.E.D. classes are available to those who do not have a high school or GED diploma and wish to earn one. These classes are voluntary. Teaching techniques are applied on a strictly individualized basis geared to the student's needs and include: computer aided instruction, traditional paper based instruction, audio cassette aided instruction, teacher-made presentations and inmate peer tutor assistance. 2. Mandatory Literacy classes are for inmates who score below the eighth grade level in Reading, Mathematics or Language on a standardized test when they first come into prison. Identified students are automatically enrolled in this class until they pass the test. This class is presented on a diagnostic and prescriptive individualized basis tailored to the student's needs. If the student does not pass the test within 300 hours of class time, his attendance is no longer required. However, he may choose to continue his education on a voluntary basis. 3. Vocational Education classes are offered in Carpentry and Custodial Services by Arizona Western College which sends instructors into the prison. Masonry classes will soon be available also. These classes offer community college credit. In order to enroll in Vocational education, the inmate must have earned a high school diploma or G.E.D. or be enrolled in the prison's G.E.D. class and making satisfactory progress therein. These classes are voluntary. 4. Correspondence classes are available from several sources to inmates who wish to enroll in them. 5. English as a Second Language classes are available to inmates as appropriate. 6. Special Education and 504 classes are available as appropriate.
