Continuing Medical Education Seminar
Q. Can someone offer an explanation that *doesn't* involve drug company-medical profession collusion to sell the highest priced drug to the most people?
A. In Canada where there is some kind of oversight and accountability, yes. But in the US we have no such thing. Pharmaceutical companies spend $13,000 annually on every doctor in the US. Some of that is in the form of "samples" but the rest is in freebies like vacations and dinners and infomerc.....er ....continuing medical education seminars that doctors are paid to attend and for which they are given continuing education credits mandated by state medical association to make sure they are "up to date." I'm not quite sure how drug company ads fit into keeping up to date...... The only way to put a stop to aggressive drug marketing in the US is to keep the drug companies locked out of doctor education and doctor's offices with enormous fines for anyone caught violating this rule whether the violator is a drug company or a doctor. I know that's never going to happen, but I can dream,
